AI Scribe Technology
Use of AI Scribe Technology in NHS Consultations
The NHS now, increasingly, uses secure AI (artificial intelligence) scribe technology to support healthcare professionals during some patient consultations. Some of our clinicians now use this technology during consultations.
What is AI scribe technology?
AI scribe technology listens to conversations between you and your clinician and creates a written summary of the consultation. This helps ensure accurate notes are recorded in your medical record.
Why is it being used?
This technology is designed to:
-
Reduce the time clinicians spend on paperwork
-
Allow more focus on listening to and caring for patients
-
Improve the accuracy and completeness of medical records
Is my information safe?
Yes. Your privacy is very important. The AI systems used in the NHS:
-
Follows strict data protection laws, including UK GDPR
-
Processes information securely and confidentially
-
Does not use your data for purposes outside your care
Do I have a choice?
Yes. You will be informed if AI scribe technology is being used during your consultation. If you prefer not to have it used, please tell your clinician. Your care will not be affected.
Who checks the notes?
A qualified healthcare professional always reviews and approves the notes created by the AI system before they are added to your medical record. The tool does not make any decisions about your care and the recording will be deleted once checks on accuracy have been made.
